September “Burrow” List

I recently read Brittany Viklund’s Substack “A Gentle September Reset for Burrow Season” and felt SUPER inspired to make my own Burrow Season prep list! You can read her full post for how she defines Burrow Season, but the gist of this concept is prepping your home, life, and vibes for the fall and winter — the “burrowing” seasons. I also love this concept because it really echos the sentiments of Katherine May’s book Wintering and the notion of preparing the body and mind for hard times and looking to the cues of nature as a way to self-regulate and mitigate stress. Obviously, Katherine May was looking much more internally and creating a metaphor around the emotionally dark seasons of life, but I think the lessons still apply. Fall is traditionally an insanely busy period in my life, but it’s also my favorite time of year, and it’s hard to appreciate it when your calendar is overbooked, you’re rushing from place to place, and you’re too stressed to relax and take it all in. So with all that said, here’s my public documentation of the things I’d like to slowly / intentionally accomplish as we approach the fall equinox. This was also loosely inspired by this list I saw on Instagram!

Preparations List

  1. Dust EVERYTHING
    Already in progress 🫡

  2. Clean out toys
Very overwhelmed at the quantity of toys we have right now and want to do a major clear out before the holidays.

  3. Reset the garage

  4. Clean out my car

  5. Wash the windows

  6. Finish resetting my desk room!!!

TBH this might be too aspirational, but I desperately want to get it done. 😅

  7. Deep clean the bathrooms

  8. Swap out my seasonal decor

  9. Lock in on monthly budget

  10. Prep the yard
This is kind of bumming me out — because of our extended heat wave and drought, the leaves are falling and the grass is dying but not in a good way.

  11. GET FLU / COVID SHOTS!!!

Celebrations List

  1. Plan our Halloween costumes

  2. See Practical Magic 2

  3. Fall pinterest mood board?!?!
This very optional. I’m feeling drawn to make one to manifest the vibes, but my spare time is limited and I might just read books and play video games instead.

  4. Watch a ton of movies
Every now and then my husband and I get the urge to “theme” a month and we’re going for Movie September. On the list we’ve got: Clue, My Own Private Idaho, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender , One Battle After Another, Talented Mister Ripley, This is Spinal Tap

  5. Trader Joe’s “fall” haul

  6. Update my September playlist

  7. Acquire gnocchi somehow
I’ve been seeing it everywhere and my body is ready. Unfortunately I don’t like cooking, so fingers-crossed the Trader Joe’s haul comes through on this one.

  8. Start junk journalling!
I used to love keeping a scrapbooks as a kid, but fell out of the practice as an adult. After a few recent trips that resulted in lots of ticket stubs and other fun ephemera, I’ve been feeling inspired to collage in my experiences in my planner/journal!

  9. Put out our “fall” themed kids books!

  10. Eat as many peaches/nectarines as possible before the season is over.
